Daily Dose: “Brunette Tatoo” by “John Lord Fonda”
John Lord Fonda is a fracking genius. He is my secret weapon.
I first came across him when he released Composite, a mix of a selection of songs released under the Citizen Records label he is signed up to with the likes of Vitalic and The Penelope[s]. This mix was a total game changer for me… I’ve listened to it so many times i know it by heart.
The section of the mix where he transitions from Junkie XL – 1967 Poem -> Public Enemy – Race Against Time -> Sébastien Tellier – Sexual Sportswear (Donovan Remix) blew me away.
I ended up buying all the individual tracks and tried to remake it to figure out what he was doing. Its a perfectly balanced clash of genre bending tunes from techno to breaks to progressive to indie. Sometimes he transitions slowly bringing one song in gently while letting the other one go… or… just smashes you in the face with a vocal sample then flips over to a heart pounding beat.
This track Brunette Tatoo is from the album Barcelona Electronic Event. It has one of those haunting harmonies generated by layering components that on there own would be quite light and airy… over something much more sinister. Somewhere in the distance there is a vocal hook of a girl singing “We make love, tonight” while closer to home a dirty glitchy melody is slowly built up around it… love it…
